Unfortunately we will be postponing our fall harvest pizza potluck due to the health advisories about air quality. I hope everyone stays safe and our thoughts are with friends, family and communities affected by the fires.
I have a truck full of compost so I will be at the Ft. Scott Community Garden from 10am-1pm tomorrow for the garden resource day- please come by for compost if you need some.
We'll reschedule the pizza party to the next planned garden resource day on November 4th. The pizza party will start at noon and end at 3pm that day.
Thanks so much for being part of our amazing garden community- continue reading to meet my new garden intern, Taylor, and learn about her upcoming year here.
Hello community gardeners of the Presidio, my name is Taylor
Jais and I am Jean’s new gardening intern. I’m extremely excited to help Jean
out with the beautiful community gardens of the Presidio for the next year!
Jean and I thought that it would be nice for me to tell you all a little bit
about myself in a blog post, click to read more about how Taylor will be helping you this year!
I was born in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and raised in Sarasota, Florida. I returned to Massachusetts for college and just finished up my
undergraduate degree at Wellesley a few months ago. At Wellesley I majored in
Environmental Anthropology- exploring the relationship between human beings and
their environments. I’ve also been working at different farms, gardens, and
cooperatives over the past four years- becoming passionate about herbalism,
permaculture, and food justice. I am excited to bring my skills and passions to
the community gardens at the Presidio! I hope that what I learn here over the
next year will help me contribute meaningfully to the urban agriculture
movement AND help bring me closer to my goal of pursuing a graduate degree in
Ethnobotany.
In addition to giving you all a little introduction to who I
am, I also wanted to let you know that I’ll be writing a series of blog posts
over the next couple of months about different gardening tips and tricks I’ve
been learning at the Garden for the Environment’s annual Urban Gardening
educational program! I’m participating in the program so that I can bring different
skills, methods, and knowledge back to the Presidio community gardens. The
class is taught by urban agricultural leaders from all over the Bay area who
have an awesome amount of specific knowledge about gardening in San Francisco,
so I’m going to be writing a blog post every couple of weeks to summarize the
information they are sharing with me and how it might apply to you all- the community
gardeners of the Presidio! I’m really excited about these posts as they’re
going to cover all kinds of important topics like soil health, microclimates of
the Bay area, crop rotation, integrated pest management, propagation, and
pruning!
That’s all for this post! I’m excited about sharing some
gardening knowledge with you all over the next couple of months and I’m also
looking forward to meeting you in the gardens J
