The three national park units that make up the Golden Gate National Parks encompass more than 80,000 acres and 91 miles of shoreline along the northern California coast. These parks are home to an amazing array of biodiversity, including over half of the bird species of North America and nearly one-third of California’s plant species!


To better understand, appreciate, and protect this natural treasure, the National Park Service, National Geographic, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and Presidio Trust are teaming up to host a 24-hour BioBlitz species count and two-day Biodiversity Festival, Friday-Saturday, March 28-29, 2014.


BioBlitz 2014 will take place in several national parks, including Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, and locations in Golden Gate National Recreation Area including the Giacomini wetlands, Muir Beach, the Marin Headlands, Crissy Field, the Presidio, Mori Point, and Rancho Corral de Tierra.


Part scientific endeavor, part festival, and part outdoor classroom, BioBlitz will bring together more than 300 leading scientists and naturalists from around the country, thousands of local community members of all ages, and more than 2,000 students from across the Bay Area.

Expert-led species inventory teams discover, count, map, and learn about the parks' diverse organisms, ranging from microscopic bacteria, wildflowers, and seals, to hawks and towering redwoods.

Enjoy the Biodiversity Festival
The FREE Biodiversity Festival will take place at Crissy Field’s East Beach in the San Francisco Presidio, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 28, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 29. The festival will feature science demonstrations and exhibits, live animals, hands-on activities provided by prominent science and environmental organizations, National Geographic-led photography workshops, food, entertainment, and art. Explorers of all ages can enjoy the festival and “graduate” from Biodiversity University by participating in a variety of activities. The Crissy Field Center will be transformed into the BioBlitz data center, where you can see science in action and work side by side with scientists to identify and catalog what is being discovered in the field. All festival events are free and open to the public, and no registration is required.

Throughout March, BioBlitz collaborating organizations such as the Institute at the Golden Gate, California Academy of Sciences, Aquarium of the Bay, the American Cetacean Society, the Marine Mammal Center, Oceana High School, and Slide Ranch will be hosting BioBlitz-related events. Parking and Transportation
Festival parking is limited to public lots around East Beach. We strongly encourage people to take public transportation, carpool, bike, walk, or use alternative transportation. PresidioGo shuttle service will be available on Friday, with an increased schedule on Saturday running every 15 minutes from the paid parking lots on the Presidio’s Main Post. ADA parking will be available at East Beach, along with bicycle parking. Learn more about parking in the Presidio.

The Muir Woods parking shuttle will begin running for the season on Saturday, March 29, to coincide with the second day of BioBlitz. We recommend carpooling to BioBlitz inventory sites, as parking will fill up quickly.

Celebrate the Spring Equinox on March 22- RSVP requested

Please join us at a potluck lunch on Saturday March 22 at the Ft. Scott Community Garden to celebrate the Spring Equinox!

We'll fire up the cob pizza oven and bake hot pizzas- please come!! Bring food to share with the group and your own place settings. Lunch starts at 11:30am and ends at 1:30pm.

At 1:30pm stay for a volunteer day at the garden- we'll be transplanting native flowers into a newly cleared garden bed, pruning salvias, weeding oxalis, and other fun projects in the garden. Gloves, water, and tools will be provided.

Here's where the garden is located. However there is NO PARKING at the garden the day of the event. Please park in Wool Court (near the tennis courts) or take the PresidiGo shuttle to the corner of Upton and Kobbe and walk to the garden.

Spring in the gardens

Here's the main culprit in your veggie seedlings disappearing! Plan ahead to protect new plantings- established plants can often survive some herbivory, but seedlings are only a few tasty bites away from obliteration.

This is a romanesco- a broccoli/ cauliflower relative that is so amazingly beautiful. The spirals remind me of aliens, drill bits, and Fibonacci sequences. What a cool thing to grow in your garden! I found this in one of our community garden plots last month:
