I finally got a chance to go see our eco-friendly ivy-eating goat herd living at the Presidio Golf Course. Excitingly, several of the ladies have given birth in the past week. These kids are about 5-7 days old.

Garden for the Environment will offer the following classes in
March of 2014. All classes will be offered at Garden for the Environment,
San Francisco’s organic teaching garden at 7th Avenue and Lawton Street.
Since our founding in 1990, the garden has operated as a demonstration
site for small-scale urban ecological food production, organic gardening,
compost education and low water-use landscaping.

Urban Composting

Spring is a great time to start a new compost
pile as you get ready for your spring garden! Join GFE as we discover how to
turn those leftovers, either from the garden or the kitchen, into “black gold”.
This fun, hands-on workshop teaches methods for both backyard and worm
composting for all seeking to enrich the bounty of their garden and reduce
their ecological footprint. Come learn what you can do to improve your

Organic Vegetable Gardening in March

Year-round gardening is one of our favorite things about the Bay
Area and now, as we find ourselves on the doorstep of Spring, it's time to get
our Spring gardens going in earnest! Join us for this class which we offer
every month for seasonal-specific instruction for year-round vegetable
gardening.
This month we'll cover:
- Vegetables to plant in Spring and when to harvest them
- Seasonal Spring Plant Care
- Seasonal Soil Fertility and garden bed preparation
- Weeds, weeds, weeds and MULCH!!! What to do about weeds and how
to use mulch.

Fruit Tree Installation and Care

Yes, you can grow organic, heirloom fruit trees in your garden in
the San Francisco Bay Area! Get started with this workshop for fruit tree
beginners in which you learn the basics of organic fruit tree care for apples,
pears and plums. As we dive into the world of organic fruit trees and organic
fruit tree care, you will learn everything you need to know to care for your
tree for the first year: how to plant your tree, irrigate properly, fertilize
with organic fertilizer, manage pests organically and winter prune (summer
pruning is covered in a separate class).
This workshop will cover both ‘pome’ fruits and ‘stone’ fruits (apples, pears and plums) and will discuss varieties of apples, pears and plums best suited for San Francisco. While this class is intended for beginners, our instructor Matthew Sutton founder of Orchard Keepers: Ecological Tree Care will be available to answer any and all advanced-topic questions.
